Doctor....Who?

My 11 year old daughter Kelly watches this show religiously, (I can't seem to get up for it) and she lit up with genuine glee when her daddy knocked out this sketch. It didn't even diminish the glee when I told her I really drew it for my bud Kevin; who wants to base a webcomic character on David Tennant, appearance-wise. So there you go, everybody wins. Kevin gets the concept sketch, I get a blog post out of it, and Kelly continues on thinking that she's got the coolest daddy ever (besides David Tennant). Click on the image to see it larger.

Silver Age Hal

Here's my take on a silver age Green Lantern; Hal Jordan. That's definitely 80's hair. Click on the image to see it larger.

My favorite style to draw in...

...is in my version of Bruce Timm's animated style. It's fast, clean, and streamlined. I love being done quickly, and satisfied with it. When I try things with high-rendering, I'm usually disappointed with the results, and it's very time-consuming. Funny thing is, working in the high-detail mode makes me think of more things to include in my drawings. So...in effect, by having that experience, I'm able to make my simpler "toon" drawings packed with extras.

How come I've never drawn this guy?

So here's Deadman; picked by my buddy Kevin. http://www.ritalinbaby.blogspot.com/
I can't believe I never had the urge to draw him before! He's one of DC's characters from the wild, and spooky 70's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadman like Swamp Thing, etc. Anyway, this is a fairly worked out sketch, about 45 min. total. In comparison, the Supes sketch previous to this was done in about 10 min.

The reset button

Sketching for fun is a lot different for me than pencilling pages. When I'm just f@ckin' around with the sketchpad, things get looser and more experimental. I'm not trying to stick to a certain style. More often than not , I'll end up coming up with a new way of doing something. Sometimes I'll hit a sketching drought, and want to start it up again; when this happens, I always start off with a Superman sketch. The first character I ever drew is the one that I have so many interpretations of. Sometimes I'll go old school Christopher Reeve with it, make him more slender, and really detailed. Other times I'll beef him up, sketch him really fast and loose, and give him a neck like an ox. This one is a little looser, more animated; channeling a little Mike Wieringo, maybe.

Like I said, a new direction.

Kevin ( http://www.ritalinbaby.blogspot.com/ ) and I are rolling on a new project together; hopefully the first of many. I'm penciling it right now; about 15 pages in. We've got a STACK of ideas to work on, so I'll probably be working on more than 1 at a time; like inking one while I'm penciling another.
